We use our gas systems every day. They help us to take a shower, cook our meals, heat our homes and warm up our pools. When your gas heater stops working, so do you!

A gas leak can be very dangerous and can easily go unnoticed until it’s too late. At Chiswick Plumbing we provide plumbing and gas installations throughout Sydney and Wollongong. Our installations are completed safely, using industry-regulated practices by licensed gas fitters.

Believe it or not, not all plumbers are qualified gas plumbers. There is extra training involved to become a gas fitting specialist... and so there should be! Gas is a very dangerous substance. If the gas fitting is not done properly then you and your family could be in danger.

5 Sings You Have A Gas Leak

Gas leaks are very serious and can be very dangerous if not attended to right away by a gas plumber. There are some signs to keep an eye (or nose) out for when it comes to gas leakage;

  1. You smell gas, which is a foul sulphur-like smell
  2. You hear hissing from a gas connection or pipe
  3. Pilot light flicking or going out on gas heating appliances
  4. Feeling ill or lightheaded and not sure why
  5. Plants or grass dying unexpectedly

If you can identify with any of the above signs then you should immediately locate your gas meter and turn off the supply to your property and call Chiswick Plumbing on 1300 508 157. Gas leaks need to be dealt with as soon as you notice them.

Gas Heater Servicing

A natural gas heater is something we pull out of storage each year, turn on the moment those mornings and evenings start to get a bit chilly, and expect them to work perfectly for us. We tend to forget that the gas heater that provides us with so much warmth and comfort has been sitting there collecting dust, dirt & debris for approximately 6 months.

A gas heater is one of the natural gas appliances that needs attention every year. A gas-fitting plumber will be able to thoroughly clean and test the heater to ensure it is functioning effectively and efficiently for you. A licensed gas fitter will also be able to identify if your heater is in need of gas repairs.

Without regular cleaning or servicing, you could also potentially be exposing yourself and your family to carbon monoxide which can lead to serious harm and even death in extreme cases. To learn more about carbon monoxide poisoning, Click Here.

If you can't remember when (or if) you last had your gas heater serviced, then give us a call and our licensed gas fitter will carry out this service for you.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas hot water Heaters work by using either natural gas or LPG gas to supply power to a continual flame, called a ‘pilot flame’ or ‘pilot light’. The pilot flame ignites a gas burner below a water storage cylinder. This cylinder stores heated water, so it is ready to go when you need it.

A thermostat monitors the water temperature. Once the water reaches its maximum safe temperature, the burner automatically turns down.

Natural gas is the cheapest and most efficient way of heating your home. Unlike electric hot water systems, gas water heaters are fast, reliable, and a lot more cost-effective. As with all household appliances, there are some issues that may arise. Some potential problems you may find with your hot water systems are;

  • Inconsistent water temperature
  • Water doesn’t reach high enough temperature
  • Your water pressure fluctuates or is lower than normal
  • Your water bill has increased
  • Your pilot light going out
  • Hot water heater is leaking from anywhere on the unit
  • There is no hot water at all

In the event that you have these issues, you will need to repair or replace your hot water system. In most cases, you should try to do everything in your power to avoid replacing your system. Prevention is the best cure!

If a hot water heater is too old, damaged or corroded, it will be unsafe to attempt to repair it. Gas is an extremely flammable substance which is why you should put the safety of yourself and your home first.

Nowadays, households cannot buy a new hot water system with an energy star rating below 5. Heaters with a rating below 5 are inefficient and cost homeowners more. There is also a choice to be made between a storage tank or a continuous flow tank.

Storage Hot Water Heater

As mentioned, a standard storage hot water heater tank keeps a water supply available at all times. These tanks usually have a 5-10 year warranty and need more maintenance than other options because they are always holding hot water. This makes them more susceptible to corrosion.

For this reason, hot water heater tanks have a sacrificial anode inside them. The anode is a metal rod that sits inside the tank and attracts minerals and impurities. It keeps corroding materials away from the tank walls and sacrifices itself instead.

The anode lasts between 2-4 years, depending on your location and water quality, before needing to be replaced. A sacrificial anode only slows down the corrosion process. It doesn’t stop it entirely. The anode needs to be replaced by a plumber but adds years to the life of the tank. If your tank is a stainless steel model, it will not have or require an anode.

Continuous Flow Hot Water Heater

Often referred to as instantaneous hot water heater, a continuous flow system only heats water as you need it. In other words, it only heats the water you’re using at any given time. Because of this, it may take a few extra seconds for the water to heat up as it makes its way from the system to your tap. There are no heat losses like there are in a storage system though.

Continuous flow is usually a cheaper method of heating, but it is not suitable for all households. Our plumbers will look at whether this is suitable for you to make sure you are getting the most efficient solution for your home.

The team at Chiswick Plumbing will help you identify the best hot water system for your home. We will look at:

  • Your existing hot water system
  • Plumbing and pipework already in place
  • How you use your hot water system

We also consider how many people are living in the home or using hot water on the property.  This dictates which hot water heater will be suitable for your needs and we can offer advice on what will be the most energy efficient.
