Stay safe this winter with a gas appliance inspection

Chiswick Plumbing • Jun 01, 2020

Winter is here, so we thought it was time to remind you to have your gas appliances checked by a licensed gasfitter/plumber. Ideally, your gas appliances should be checked every two years.

If you’re not sure when your gas appliances were last checked, there are some signs you can look for to indicate your gas is sub-par. Some of these include:

  • Yellow flames coming from the stovetop burner rather than blue flames
  • Dark staining on or around appliances and connections
  • Abnormal amounts of condensation on windows
  • Pilot lights that continually extinguish

Why do gas appliances need to be checked?

A gasfitter/plumbing inspection of your gas appliances is recommended at least once every two years to protect you and your family from potential gas leaks and Carbon Monoxide (CO) exposure.

A safety check or service will also help you decide when it is necessary to replace your gas appliances. As with all things in life, prevention is the key. Servicing and maintenance of your appliances will keep them in good condition but eventually, the time will come to replace them.

Our plumber can advise on when to replace your appliance and which solution is best for your home. Doing this ahead of time will save you the headache of having to quickly replace it when it breaks down or becomes faulty.

What is Carbon Monoxide poisoning?

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a type of poisoning that occurs through the inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO). Prolonged exposure to high levels of CO is toxic for animals and humans and can cause long-term health effects such as brain damage or heart disease.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

  • Lethargy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

How do I get my gas connections checked?

Don’t be alarmed, your local gas fitter/plumber can assess the quality of your gas appliances, to keep you healthy and safe. There are two types of gas checks that can be completed.

Gas service

This is a complete inspection of gas appliances, piping and vents. It checks that everything is in correct working order.

Gas safety check

This is a specific inspection that is designed to check that:

  • Gas appliance operating pressure is correct
  • Air supply to appliances is adequate
  • Gas is burning correctly
  • Flues and chimneys are clear so that fumes and emissions are vented safely outside of your home
  • All safety devices (such as shut off valves) are working properly

It is important to note that a gas safety check does not replace a gas service but a gas service does include a safety check.
