Do You Need A Water Saving Toilet System?

Chiswick Plumbing • Oct 22, 2021

Most of us won’t consider replacing a toilet until it’s out of order, or deemed too expensive to repair. However, toilets have changed considerably over the past 20 years. Not even including the high-tech toilets that are commonplace in Japan, all toilets have been subject to design and technology changes. As a result, switching to a modern toilet can save you money with every flush.

Here, we explore the importance of updating your toilet to save both your money and the environment.

The Benefits of Water Saving Toilets

As the ongoing climate crisis continues to impact on how we all live our lives, we understand the importance of using water efficiently.

The easiest way to cut down on water use is to focus on the room that uses the most water — the bathroom. Toilets contribute to almost 30% of the average’s home’s indoor water consumption, so you should ensure that your toilet is as efficient as possible.

Upgrading to modern, water saving toilet systems is one of the fastest and easiest ways to cut down your water bill. So, a new toilet can save both your bank balance and the environment.

Old Toilets vs. New Toilets

The central difference between old toilets and modern high efficiency toilets is the amount of water the toilet uses. Toilets sold after 1992 use less than half the amount of water as their older counterparts. New toilets also provide more reliable flushes and more modern and convenient features.

All modern toilets sold in Australia must be compliant with the Australian Government’s Water Efficiency Labelling Standards (WELS). The WELS requires that toilets must be fitted with a flush that does not exceed 5.5 litres.

Modern toilets are designed to save you money and also save the environment, making an upgrade to a more modern toilet a very savvy choice.

Water Saving Toilet vs. Regular Toilets

Water efficient toilets don’t compromise on quality to save water. While older toilets could use around 25 litres of water per flush, modern toilets use around 4 litres of water per flush.

In addition to the efficient water use, modern toilets also last longer than their older counterparts and require less servicing

How do Water Efficient Toilets Work?

There are several kinds of eco-friendly toilets you can opt for to save dollars and the environment.

Low-flush Toilets

Older toilets can use a mind-blowing 25 litres per flush, wasting a ridiculous amount of water with every flush.

If the average person uses the toilet 5 times per day and lives at home with 3 other people, your bathroom could be flushing away 454 litres per day!

Low-flush toilets are efficient, eco-friendly toilets that provide the same quality and reliable flush but only use 6 litres per flush. If the same 4 people replaced their older toilet with a low-flush toilet they would only use 121 litres per day, an incredible saving.

Dual-flush Toilets

Dual-flush systems are low-flush toilets taken one step further. A dual-flush toilet offers a choice between a smaller and a larger flush. If only flushing liquid waste, the toilet generates a smaller flush of only 3 litres. For flushing solid waste, the toilet generates a larger flush of 6 litres.

Dual system flush toilets allow users to cut back even more on their water use, only using more water when necessary

WaterSense Toilets

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense scheme is similar to the EnergyStar program that Australians have grown accustomed to. Both schemes deploy efficiency standards that encourage manufacturers to produce products that meet these standards. In return, manufacturers can then place the WaterSense logo on their products, helping to convince consumers to buy their product.

To be classified as a WaterSense toilet, a toilet must be 20% more energy efficient than the standard low-flush toilet. In terms of statistics, this means that a WaterSense toilet will only use less than 5 litres per flush.

The EPA believes that using a WaterSense toilet helps a family reduce their water waste by between 20 and 60 percent. In terms of monetary savings. This equates to more than $110 extra a year in your pocket.

Government Toilet Subsidies

If the promise of cheaper water bills weren’t alluring enough, there are several areas in Australia that offer rebates to those using modern, low-flush toilets.

The NSW government may subsidise the full amount if you are experiencing financial difficulties. Check with your local government or water board to see if there are any special subsidies or services in place for using a modern, efficient toilet.

So, if you want to save the environment and save your bank balance, you should start in the bathroom. Switch to a modern, low-flush toilet today and see the difference straight away.
