Domestic Gas & Electric Water Heaters

Choosing which Gas or Electric Hot Water System is best for you

Choosing which Hot Water System is best for your house can seem a daunting process.  Chiswick Plumbing is able to assess your property and household needs to make recommendations and provide detailed quotes.  Here is a sample of the gas and electric hot water systems available in Australia.

Gas Hot Water Systems

  • If you have a connection, Natural gas is a good option.  It can be cheaper than electricity; gas rates don’t vary through the day and gas hot water systems can heat water as needed.
  • A four-person household may require a 135–170L tank. You also have the option of an instantaneous system.
  • Due to venting requirements, Gas systems are usually installed outdoors, however, they can be installed indoors with a flue.
  • Gas has an energy efficiency star rating.
  • Some have a pilot light, which uses a small amount of gas. Electric ignition is more economical, but in a blackout you can lose your hot water supply.
  • Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) bottles are an alternative to natural gas – however, this will increase your running costs.

5 Star Gas Storage

Perfect for anyone looking to convert from an old electric water heater, 5 star gas storage water heaters are better from the environment and cost less to run.

Chiswick Plumbing install 5 Star Gas storage water heaters, such as:

Instantaneous/Continuous Flow

  • A tankless system that delivers continuous Hot Water.
  • Entering cold water passes through a heat exchanger (usually located outside) to instantly deliver hot water to your various taps and fixtures.
  • Continuous or AKA Instantaneous Hot Water Systems, heat only as much water as you need, when you need it. Depending on the distance between your tap and the Hot Water System, it may take a few seconds before hot water begins to flow.
  • Most models use gas, but electric models are available.
  • The size you need (flow rate in litres per minute) depends more on the number of hot water outlets the heater has to serve, than on the number of people in the household. As a general rule, for a two-bathroom house you need a flow rate of about 22–24 L/min. Talk to your Chiswick Plumbing to find the right capacity for your home.

Storage tank

  • The majority of Hot Water Systems powered by electric, gas, solar and heat pump use a tank as opposed to Continuous Flow systems.
  • Most mild-steel tanks can corrode over time and carry a 5-10 year warranty. Regular maintenance is highly recommended to reduce costs.  Our Chiswick Plumbing Service Agreement can assist with maintenance.
  • Stainless steel tanks are more expensive, but generally last longer and don’t require as much maintenance as mild-steel tanks. They usually carry a 10-year warranty, but still require occasional maintenance (such as replacement of valves and seals).
  • Dependent on your local water quality, our Chiswick Plumber may be able to suggest which tank is best suited to your home.
  • Tanks are insulated, but there is always some heat loss over time, so it’s good to install them in a sunny spot or in an insulated space.

Electric Storage

  • An electrically heated storage tank system is usually relatively cheap to buy and install, but is usually the most expensive to run, especially if it’s on the continuous (full day) rate.
  • Systems that run on off-peak electricity are much cheaper to run, but need a larger tank as the water heated overnight has to last you all day. And off-peak electricity isn’t available to all homes.
  • A four-person household typically needs a 125–160L tank for a continuous system or 250–315L for off-peak.
  • Can be installed indoors or outdoors.
