Gas Hot Water Systems
Natural gas is a great option if you have a connection. Gas rates don’t vary through the day, which can make it cheaper than electricity, and gas hot water systems can heat water as needed.
Gas systems have an energy efficiency star rating to help you choose the best system for your needs. A four-person household may require a 135–170L tank to meet their hot water needs. Or there’s the option to install an instantaneous system to supply hot water on demand.
To heat your water, your system will require an ignition source to burn the gas. Some will have a pilot light that uses a small amount of gas, while others may use electric ignition. While the latter option is more economical, it means you can lose your hot water supply in a blackout.
Most gas hot water systems are installed outdoors to comply with venting requirements, but they can be installed indoors with a flue. Where natural gas isn’t an option liquid petroleum gas (LPG) bottles are an alternative, however, using bottled gas will increase your running costs.
5 Star Gas Storage
These systems are perfect for anyone looking to convert from an old electric water heater. 5-star gas storage water heaters are better from the environment and cost less to run.
Chiswick Plumbing installs 5-star gas storage water heaters, such as:
Dux Prodigy 5 Range
The new burner technology in this range provides faster recovery rates and more hot water. An identical footprint to the existing 3 star gas storage unit ensures it’s easy to replace and upgrade to a more energy-efficient unit. It also comes with water connections on both sides of the tank for fast and easy installation.
- Patented flue damper design reduces heat loss
- Full flow mains pressure delivery
- 5.3-star energy efficiency rating
- 10-year tank and flue warranty, 1-year full parts and labour
Rheem Stellar Range
It’s a revolution in high-performance water heating with sleek, ultra-modern styling! The Rheem Stellar has a first hour capacity of up to 360 litres followed by 200 litres of hot water every hour – much more than most households will ever need.
- 130 litre and 160 litre vitreous enamel models available
- 5-star energy efficiency rating
- Mains pressure to power many taps at once
- Big enough for the largest family
- 10-year cylinder warranty for complete peace of mind
AquaMax Gas Range
AquaMAX Five Star Gas water heaters have options to cover most needs. These units are run on mains pressure to keep up with high demands. When you turn on the second, third or fourth tap, the hot water keeps flowing at mains pressure levels.
- 270 to 390-litre first hour delivery
- 130 to 155-litre stainless steel tank
- 5-star energy rating
- 10-year cylinder warranty
- Outside installation
This is a tankless style system that delivers continuous hot water. Cold water passes through a heat exchanger, usually located outside, to instantly deliver hot water to your home.
Continuous (aka instantaneous) hot water systems only heat as much water as you need – when you need it. Depending on the distance between your tap and the hot water system, it may take a few seconds before hot water begins to flow. Most models use gas, but electric models are available.
The size you need (flow rate in litres per minute) depends more on the number of hot water outlets the heater has to serve, than on the number of people in the household. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need a flow rate of about 22–24 L/min for a two-bathroom house.

The majority of hot water systems powered by electric, gas, solar or heat pump use a tank as opposed to continuous flow systems. Mild-steel tanks can corrode over time but generally carry a 5-10 year warranty. Even so, regular maintenance is highly recommended to reduce costs and extend the longevity of your system.
Stainless steel tanks are more expensive, but generally last longer and don’t require as much maintenance as mild-steel tanks. They usually carry a 10-year warranty, but still require occasional maintenance, such as replacement of valves and seals.
A Chiswick Plumbing Service Agreement can provide the correct level of maintenance for your system.
Other points to consider are the quality of your water and it’s potential for corrosion, as well as the position of your tank. Tanks are insulated, but there is always some heat loss over time. We recommend installing your tanks in a sunny spot or in an insulated space where possible.
